Linux Windows Pdftk:
Converting OpenOffice documents to PDF or HTML, as a batch
Mail Merge database + PDF for free in Linux (w/o big overhead)


Pdftk allows you to manipulate PDF easily and freely. It does not require Acrobat, and it runs on Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, FreeBSD and Solaris. Use it to:

  • Merge PDF Documents
  • Split PDF Pages into a New Document
  • Rotate PDF Pages or Documents
  • Decrypt Input as Necessary (Password Required)
  • Encrypt Output as Desired
  • Fill PDF Forms with FDF Data or XFDF Data and/or Flatten Forms
  • Apply a Background Watermark or a Foreground Stamp
  • Report on PDF Metrics such as Metadata, Bookmarks, and Page Labels
  • Update PDF Metadata
  • Attach Files to PDF Pages or the PDF Document
  • Unpack PDF Attachments
  • Burst a PDF Document into Single Pages
  • Uncompress and Re-Compress Page Streams

Wow, that was friggin easy!I gave up.

Then I didn’t really, so I read even more up on it. And instead of being obsessed by form filling I found out that IFPDF could get another PDF and put it as background. That’s what I’ve been looking for.

But then I read the pdftk man page yet again, and WOW, it CAN put a pdf as a background.


  • Make a 30.000 page document with the fields filled in.
  • Run pdftk on it, to use background.pdf as background on all of those 30.000 pages.

And it works! The PDF doesn’t get any bigger! w00t!

This is the command:

pdftk names.pdf background big_background.pdf output out.pdf
